Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)

Abdominoplasty is the third most popular and most commonly performed aesthetic plastic surgery procedure in the world.

After childbirth there are irreversible changes such as abdominal rectus diastasis, increase in visceral fat and it's uneven distribution. Abdominoplasty helps to improve the appearance of the abdomen by removing excess skin or fat from the abdominal area to make it appear firmer.

Types of abdominoplasty.

Classic (full) abdominoplasty. This involves removing skin from above the navel down to the pubic region. Full abdominoplasty is suitable for removal of excess loose skin, rectus diastasis repair, repair of stretched abdominal muscles, hernia repair. The operation lasts 2-3 hours.

Mini abdominoplasty. A mini abdominoplasty is often sufficient for patients who have had a caesarean section and who suffer from stubborn fat deposits and diastasis, but who do not have significant fat deposits. The procedure takes 1-2 hours.

Lipoabdominoplasty. This type of abdominoplasty is used for women who have sagging skin and localised fat deposits in the abdomen, sides and lower back. The operation takes up to 7 hours and recovery is longer than with other types of tummy tuck.

Anchor abdominoplasty. This type is used for patients who have excess skin caused by massive weight loss, which has led to sagging skin. In these cases, an anchor abdominoplasty is used.

How does it work?

It is very important for patients to understand that this is not a weight loss procedure or a treatment for obesity. The ultimate goals of the procedure are to remove excess skin and fat and to tighten the abdominal muscles through the least visible incision possible.

Abdominoplasty is performed under a combination of local and general anaesthetic.

Rehabilitation after abdominoplasty

- You may feel pain for 2-4 days after the operation and you will need to take painkillers.

- You may need to wear a compression garment for a month while you heal.

- It takes 2-3 months to see the final results.

- It is necessary to avoid sports for 2 months. Avoid heat for three months after the operation.

- There may be a temporary loss of sensation in the lower abdomen. This will disappear with time.

IMPORTANT. Remember that every patient is unique and your results may vary. To achieve a permanent result, it is important to maintain a healthy diet, lead an active lifestyle and maintain a healthy weight. As obesity progresses, additional correction may be required.

TUMMY TUCK FAQ

Do I need a tummy tuck?

The indications for an abdominoplasty are abdominal deformity after pregnancy, sagging skin after massive weight loss, umbilical hernia, diastasis, noticeable stretch marks. But perhaps the most important factor is psychological. Abdominoplasty is usually performed when a person is unhappy with the appearance of the abdominal area.

How should I prepare for an abdominoplasty?
Ideally, you should be close to your target weight. Remember that abdominoplasty is not a weight loss procedure. Ensure that the necessary blood and urine tests, ferritin levels and coagulation tests are carried out before the operation. Girls are advised to consult a gynaecologist.
Stop smoking. Stop drinking alcohol for 2 weeks before the operation.

How soon after an abdominoplasty can I have a bath?
Patients should not immerse their abdomen in water for up to 2-3 months after abdominoplasty. After 5-7 days, your wounds will have healed sufficiently for you to take a shower. But be careful not to rub your tummy with a sponge.

Can I sleep on my tummy after an abdominoplasty?
During the recovery period you will need to find new comfortable sleeping positions that allow you to sleep on your stomach for at least a month. It is important to avoid any pressure on the damaged area and any tension in the abdominal muscles.
